problem solving + final poster

So just as i thought i'd finished my final piece to photograph for my poster i went to show my flat mate Chris Stanley in the second year graphics group and ask his opinion on the final piece. Luckily he made me notice i'd made a mistake in my work, instead of putting 'GF Smith' i'd put 'GM Smith' - this was probably due to the fact i'd been looking at the GM cricket brief and work from my flat mate. Luckily it was spotted before the hand in so i had time to correct it by cutting out a separate 'F' and fitting it into place on my final piece and photographing it!

GF Smith Poster..

As part of the task 2 on the brief, we were having to design a poster celebrating '100 years of GF Smith Paper'
so i started to design and sketch some thumbnail sketched in my sketchbook and came to doing a pop up letters for the poster..

my final 3-D object

i decided to become more intrigued with the shape icosahedron and decided to see if that i made more that one or two, they would fit together perfectly and see how it would work..
due to this they didnt quite fit perfectly together, however it made an interesting piece so i decided to keep it as a final piece. i decided just having my shape on just white blank paper wouldn't be too exciting so i decided to use different bits from magazines to cover the shape.

icosahedron

i decided to start on making my final 3-d object today and decided to work some more with triangles and came across the shape icosahedron which i found interesting and decided to make nets for it.
it is a regular polyhedron with 20 identical equilateral triangular faces, 30 edges and 12 vertices.

triangles

i've begun to stick to one shape in my net making for my 3-d objects, it seems ive grown fond of triangles and started to look into different ways i could create an interesting shape!
here is one of my favourite shapes i ended up coming across...

quick experiments

here i produced some 3-d paper objects based on an actual object here i chose a flower sort of theme to focus on and tried to get my paper to reflect this image...

springggg

today I experimented with 3-d forms again with paper, and tested out one of the less complex theories of a paper spring, by folding 2 strips of paper overlapping each other.

Rob Ryan..

Well it could be argued that Rob Ryan's artwork is not really relevant duting this project because his final out comes are not in 3-d form but i am a really big fan of his work and i'm going to class it as 'paper engineering'.
the amount of detail and time he puts into each of his pieces is absolutely increadible!

He definately inspires me and is one of my favourite artist i've come across in the past years.

more attempts at paper folding..

after one of my workshops with Richard Sweeney, showing us different techniques on how to fold paper and create different 3-d objects, i started looking at curved folds to making a rippled effect..

workshop attempts number one!

Here is some of my work I produced in the workshop with Richard Sweeney and outside of the workshop..

I tried a varied range of different techniques of paper folding taught by Richard Sweeney including straight line folding with scores, and curved ones.

Richard Sweeney..

So during this new project we've been lucky enough to have
guest artist Richard Sweeney working with us
in a few workshops to get us going with exploring different techniques of folding paper.

I have been looking at a lot of Richard Sweeney's work and really admire it. It's so beautiful on how sculpted and abstract it looks.
